Welcome to The Gourmet Student!
Over the past few years of living on my own as a student I have often found myself in class all day, staying up to the wee hours of the night studying and grabbing unhealthy fast food or tasteless microwave-ables because it was easy. I quickly got bored of the mac and cheese, peanut butter sandwiches and the oh so easy Ragu pasta.
Over time, I started to venture out of the university campus world to see what my city (London, Ontario) has to offer. I slowly discovered food of different cultures and the untapped resources of farmer's markets. I also slowly changed my kitchen into a test lab and began conducting recipe experiments. Some turned out delish, while others...well lets just say you won't be seeing any of those recipes on this blog!
I began to see cooking as a relaxing experience, and recipe-hunting and shopping as a hobby. I realized that cooking was a lot easier than I thought. At the beginning I made a ton of mistakes and quickly learned from them. In fact today, I still make mistakes but I believe thats what makes you a good cook, about learning what works and what doesn't. I also realized that cooking can be a science and an art; there are some hidden rules and tricks out there that can really help. I began to view food more than just fuel for the body, but as a delicacy of life, a common source among friends and family and something that can bring joy and love to lives of many.
Many years (and many kitchen disasters) later, I found myself still living the student life but with a lot more flavor and excitement. Although I don't have any professional training, I have life experience. I created this blog in hopes to share my secrets with my fellow students out there. Some students have little spare time, others have a tight budget, some of you may use your oven to store sweaters. Heck you may not even be a student, just someone (anyone) on a tight budget! I attempt to help you overcome those obstacles and begin to enjoy the world of cooking. No matter what your skill level is, you do not have to sacrifice flavor. Just because you are a student, doesn't mean you can't eat gourmet!
